Nagpur: Mounting debt and an ongoing agrarian crisis have claimed another farmer’s life in Vidarbha. A 56-year-old farmer from Katol, who had been struggling with severe financial distress due to repeated crop losses and natural calamities, allegedly ended his life by jumping into a well on his farm.
The deceased has been identified as Rameshwar Jangalu Hazare (56), a resident of Budhwar Peth in Katol. According to sources, Hazare owned around 6.5 acres of agricultural land in Wandli village, where he had a well and a cattle shed. Having spent years cultivating his land to support his family, he had reportedly been under immense mental stress in recent months due to escalating debts and financial difficulties.
According to information, Hazare left for his farm at around 11 am on June 11. At approximately 7 pm, he allegedly jumped into the well located on his farmland. A nearby farmer reportedly witnessed the incident and raised an alarm, but due to the absence of people in the vicinity, no immediate rescue could be carried out.
Upon receiving information about the incident, family members rushed to the spot. Katol Municipal Council Vice-Chairman Sandeep Wanjari also reached the scene, and the police were informed. With the assistance of local residents and villagers, Hazare’s body was retrieved from the well. Police conducted a panchnama and sent the body for post-mortem examination.
The farmer’s wife told authorities that Hazare had taken loans from several financial institutions, including the State Bank, Nagpur District Central Cooperative Bank, Pragati Cooperative Credit Society in Katol, and other lenders to support agricultural activities. However, repeated crop failures and declining income had made it increasingly difficult for him to repay the installments, pushing him deeper into financial distress.
Villagers said erratic rainfall, recurring natural disasters, and rising cultivation costs have severely affected the economic condition of farmers in the region over the past few years. Hazare’s death has once again highlighted the persistent challenges faced by farmers and the growing agrarian crisis in rural Maharashtra.
Hazare is survived by his wife, children, and other family members. His untimely death has left the family devastated and cast a pall of gloom over the village. Farmer organisations and local residents have urged the government to provide financial assistance to the bereaved family and extend relief from outstanding agricultural loans.
