Nagpur: In a baffling act, three motorcycles of police were set ablaze in front of a Police Chowky near Vasantrao Naik Slums in Sitabuldi police station area in the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. The Police are trying hard to identify the culprits involved in the crime.
The Police Chowky belongs to one of the beats of Sitabuldi police. The Chowky had been renovated after the mass violence in 2012, when slumdwellers had lynched a gangster Bhuru after the gambling racketeers had murdered a man and buried his body in the locality.
The policemen used to park their vehicles at the Chowky and patrol the area in Government vehicles. Constable Shyam Pandey, Mohan Paradkar and Digambar Bhoyar posted at Sitabuldi Police Station had night duty on Saturday. The trio parked their vehicles in front of the outpost and went patrolling in Government vehicles. Unidentified persons set the vehicles afire at around 2 am.
Locals alerted the police about the incident. The Police staff rushed to the spot and called a fire tender. The fire was doused at around 2.30 am. The vehicles were completely damaged in the fire. A police official said that someone deliberately set the vehicles on fire. Cops are checking CCTV footage and also activated informers to identify the culprits. A case was registered by Sitabuldi police against unidentified persons.
According to reports, a former externee, Abu alias Azeem, who is also an addict, could be behind the incident. Some cops from Sitabuldi police station had visited Abu’s place which may have left him disturbed. The cops had visited his place as a routine exercise for checking, the reports said.
