NAGPUR: Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangare Patil on Tuesday unveiled a comprehensive action plan aimed at curbing crime in the city and ensuring safer and more responsive policing for citizens.

The action plan covers a wide range of concerns, including vehicle theft, burglaries, crimes against the person, chain snatching, cyber fraud, the safety of women and children, illegal businesses, traffic management and maintenance of law and order during upcoming festivals.

Addressing a press conference, Nangare Patil said the police would make greater use of modern technology, CCTV surveillance, patrolling, naka bandi and analysis of criminal records to prevent crime. Given Nagpur’s large population and available manpower, he said effective use of technology and better deployment of police resources would be crucial.

The Commissioner stressed that policing should not be limited to investigating crimes after they occur. Strengthening preventive policing and identifying potential threats before an offence takes place would be a key part of the new strategy.

Vehicle theft and burglaries under special focus

Vehicle theft, house break-ins and crimes against the person will remain among the major areas of focus. Police will closely monitor habitual offenders, regularly update their records and analyse crime patterns at individual police station levels.

The analysis will be used to identify crime-prone areas and determine the preventive measures required in each locality.

Cybercrime to face special attention

The police will intensify efforts against online financial fraud, fake links and other crimes committed through digital platforms. The cybercrime wing will be strengthened with greater emphasis on technical expertise and the effective use of digital evidence during investigations.

Alongside enforcement, police will conduct awareness campaigns to educate citizens about cyber security and ways to protect themselves from online fraud.

Women and child safety a priority

The safety of women and children will remain a top priority under the action plan. Police presence will be increased in sensitive areas, while complaints involving women will be dealt with promptly.

The Nirbhaya squads will also be made more effective to improve security for women. In cases involving children, police will focus on conducting effective investigations under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Crackdown on chain snatching and street crime

To curb chain snatching and other street crimes, police patrolling, naka bandi and checking of suspicious persons will be intensified.

CCTV networks will be used to identify offenders as well as track their movements. Police will also use surveillance inputs to identify suspicious activities and prevent offences in vulnerable areas.

Action against illegal businesses to continue

The police will continue action against illegal businesses and establishments violating regulations, including hookah centres.

Nangare Patil made it clear that a strict approach would be adopted against activities that contribute to or facilitate criminal behaviour in the city.

Tight security ahead of upcoming festivals

With several festivals and public events approaching, additional police deployment will be arranged in sensitive areas. Patrolling and naka bandi will be increased, and those attempting to disturb law and order will face immediate action.

The Commissioner said security arrangements for VIPs would continue, but stressed that the safety of ordinary citizens would receive equal importance.

Emergency response system to be assessed

The police response mechanism will also undergo regular assessment. Officials will examine how quickly police personnel reach the spot after a citizen contacts the 112 emergency number, whether the required assistance is provided and whether the complaint is handled appropriately.

The assessment will help senior officers identify gaps in the response system and take corrective measures.

Greater use of CCTV for crime prevention

The city’s CCTV network will be used more extensively for both crime prevention and investigation.

While footage will continue to be used to trace suspects after crimes, police will also focus on identifying suspicious movements and activities in advance to prevent offences.

Traffic management on the agenda

Traffic management will also form an important part of the police strategy. Measures will be taken to address congestion, parking problems, signal management and pedestrian safety.

Action against traffic violations will continue, along with efforts to recover pending traffic fines.

New police stations to get a push

The rapid expansion of Nagpur has increased the need for additional police stations in several parts of the city. The need for new police stations in areas including Pimpala, Bhilgaon and Kalamna Market was highlighted.

Nangare Patil said positive decisions had been taken at the government level regarding funding, administrative approvals, vehicles and other infrastructure required for the proposed police stations.

He expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule for their support in this regard.

Police performance to be continuously monitored

The performance of police personnel will be reviewed at every stage, from registration of a complaint to its resolution.

Senior officers will monitor whether police reached the location within the required time after receiving a citizen’s call, whether the complaint was properly registered and whether the complainant received the necessary assistance.

The objective is to improve accountability and ensure that citizens receive timely and effective police services.

‘Reducing crime is the primary goal’

Nangare Patil said reducing crime in Nagpur would remain the police department’s foremost priority.

The police will focus on preventive action, technology-driven policing, analysis of criminal records and effective deployment of available manpower to create a safer environment for citizens.

The action plan, he said, is intended to move beyond a reactive approach to policing. By combining preventive measures, intensified patrolling, CCTV surveillance, data analysis and faster emergency response, the Nagpur Police aim to prevent crimes, respond more effectively to incidents and strengthen public confidence in the city’s policing system.
