Cops go on top gear to celebrate 50 years of Police Commissionerate, in style

The stone faced city cops are now-a-days are planning an array of events to mark Golden Jubilee of Nagpur Police Commissionerate. The Commissionerate has completed 50 years in the Second Capital City of Nagpur and the celebrations are being planned in a befitting manner in tune with the changing crime scenario and need of hi tech investigations. A team of cops has specifically been assigned the duty of collecting memorable happenings of the past 50 years to give the celebrations a grand toast.

Vidarbha and some areas of Madhya Pradesh were part of C P and Berar region. A united Maharashtra was formed in 1960. At that time Nagpur along with Vidarbha was included in Maharashtra. Being “Heart” of the country and considering its population and crime scenario the then Chief Minister Vasantrao Naik had decided to set up Police Commissionerate in Nagpur. After completion of administrative process, Nagpur Police Commissionerate started functioning on July 1, 1965. According to some senior officials, the city, at that time, comprised of 10 police stations and three zones. The strength of city police force was 60-70 officials and 600-700 police personnel.

The Police Commissionerate functioned with a few vehicles and facilities. As the population increased from the year 1975 so the crime rate. From 1992 onwards, the face of crime changed dramatically. On one hand casteist elements and on the other hand criminal gangs posed grave challenges to the city police force. A few years later, the local criminals ‘flourished’ in other illegal businesses. In the 2004, land mafia got active. Crime against womenfolk jumped by leaps and bounds. The city police force also faced challenges on another front – smuggling of lethal weapons, narcotics, terror acts by Naxals and SIMI. Hi tech and cyber crimes also gripped the city, menacingly.
