Nagpur: Setting a clear political tone marked by leadership, discipline and unity, the Indian National Congress has taken the early initiative in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation by successfully becoming the first major political party to register its group, Nagpur Mahavikas Aghadi, at the Divisional Commissioner’s office.
With this move, the Congress has gained a strategic edge in the evolving municipal power equations, underlining its organisational strength and clear political direction. The party’s swift and decisive action has sent a strong message across Nagpur’s political landscape.

In a show of rare unity, all 34 Congress corporators were present together during the registration process, reflecting cohesion, internal discipline and collective faith in the party’s leadership. The occasion was attended by Nagpur City (District) Congress Committee President and West Nagpur MLA Vikas Thakre, MLC Abhijit Wanjari, Girish Pandav, Kunal Raut and several senior party leaders.
The 34 corporators unanimously elected senior leader Sanjay Madhukar Mahakalkar as their Group Leader. A four-time corporator with extensive administrative and political experience, Mahakalkar’s leadership was endorsed without dissent. Significantly, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee promptly granted official approval to the decision, reinforcing the party’s commitment to democratic and decisive leadership processes.
Despite the intensity of the election campaign and the post-poll phase, Congress leaders, workers and corporators have remained united, a factor that has become a major talking point in Nagpur’s political circles. The party’s firm stand and visible cohesion have drawn open appreciation from citizens, positioning Congress as a strong, stable and credible alternative in the city’s civic politics.
The group has been formally named Nagpur Mahavikas Aghadi. With corporators from other secular political parties expressing willingness to align with Congress, the alliance is expected to expand further and emerge as a more influential force in the coming days.
