Former Petroleum Minister and advisor to Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, Manishankar Aiyyar said Congress was decimated to worst ever defeat in Lok Sabha polls for two obvious reasons – the party could not revert with solid reply on charges leveled by the Oppostion and also Congress failed to propagate its public welfare programmes to larger masses, and by the time it reached to the people, they had already made up their minds against the party. He said victory and defeat remained part and parcel of Congress party’s long tenure and the party has been debarred from power due to its own mistakes. Aiyyar retained hope of coming back to power again.

He was addressing a sarpanch sammelan at Ramtek near here on the occasion of senior Congress leader Ranjeet Deshmukh’s birthday. Aiyyar returned Nagpur yesterday while he interacted with press men on Thursday.

Talking to reporters here, he said it was not proper for Congress to come up with one line reply on a single line question raised on its veracity. He said a detailed report would be prepared after review in 2-3 months. The party has also planned to come up to the media with this report.

‘How much money BJP spent in polls?’

Upon the controversy over the newly inducted Human Resources Development Minister Smriti Irani’s educational qualification, Aiyyar said instead of questioning her academic credentials, Congress should evaluate her functioning owing to the reports that she had been assigned the task of meeting Sangh’s expectation.

Upon the Narendra Modi government’s decision to form Special Investigation Team on black money, Aiyyar said Modi should first let the people know how much and where BJP has spent on election campaign. “Then they (Modi government) would not feel the need to go to Switzerland (Swiss Banks),” he commented.

‘Modi govt’s threat to nation’

Venting his ire on the newly formed government, Aiyyar went on to say that Modi government is threat to the nation and if opposition would not unite against the government in the nick of time, then it would cause a great deal of harm to the country. He said Modi government has been voted to power as they surfaced as distinct names but it would be troublesome for them to touch section 370. “Instead they should bring a resolution to discuss on the bill against eve teasing,” he opined.

‘Priyanka Gandhi should join active politics’

Aiyyar was keen to shower praise on Gandhi family saying that the family is boon for Congress. He also viewed that Rahul Gandhi should continue to lead the party and Priyanka Gandhi should seriously think over joining active politics.

‘PESA effective against naxals’

He said that Panchayat Extension to Scheduled Areas Act, 1996 or PESA could prove effective in flushing out naxalites from the vulnerable areas.

Among others present on the occasion were Ranjeet Deshmukh, Amol Deshmukh, INTUC leader S Q Jama and other leaders.
