Nagpur: The District Collector Vipin Itankar on Monday stated the need for a heat wave death audit as per the government protocol, following the death of 11 people and several others falling ill due to extreme heat during an award ceremony in an open ground in Navi Mumbai. Private health institutions are also required to furnish records and statistics of affected patients to the government, similar to Covid cases.
Itankar has urged people to avoid going out between 12 noon and 3 pm, and increase their water intake. Concerned departments, including police, are requested to exercise caution while issuing permissions to morchas, dharnas and meetings between 2 pm and 4 pm. Educational institutes have been urged to create awareness among students about heatwave precautions, adjust their schedules of classes and examinations as per the prevailing temperature conditions and accordingly declare holidays.
The district administration has prepared a heat wave action plan that has been appreciated by the government, with nodal officers already appointed. Special heatwave wards have been set up at the Government Medical College and Hospital and Mayo hospital. The medicine supplies and stock required for heatwave treatment have been checked and kept ready for any emergency.
District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Deepak Selukar stated that primary health centres, rural hospitals and sub-centres have been alerted and kept ready with cold rooms and medicines. If the patients require further help, then they would be referred to government hospitals. The Collector’s guidelines also urge civic bodies to keep parks, gardens and such places open in the afternoon hours for people to rest. Authorities managing bus and railway stations have been instructed to keep fans on.
The public is urged to cooperate and be concerned for their own safety during the heatwave.
