The Summer of Nagpur has not even dawned in the city and the torture of its citizens has not started but the issue of erratic water supply has reached the boiling point. And the volcano of citizens’ anger erupted on Wednesday when the womenfolk, specifically in large number, of Bhawani Nagar area of Pardi Ward stormed the Lakadganj Water Tank premises and forced the Orange City Water (OCW) officials run for their lives. The “hot” episode was enacted by the outraged citizens who were waiting for water tankers for the past four days but in vain.

The thirsty crowd of citizens, led by Ward Corporator Kumudini Kaikade, hounded the running OCW officials up to Lakadganj Zone Office of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) until the officials took refuge in the Zone Office. But here also they were not spared as the citizens gheraoed the premises and shouted high-pitched slogans against the OCW and even fluttered chappals in the air. The high-voltage drama continued for over two hours much to the amusement of children and other bystanders on the roadside. It was an opportunity of a lifetime for many. Finally, the atmosphere calmed down when the OCW higher-ups Praveen Sharan and Amol Bhandarkar reached the spot and pacified the ever growing crowd by dispatching a water tanker immediately to Bhawani Nagar area, the starting point of volcanic eruption. The OCW officials assured the citizens, specifically the womenfolk, no repetition of such torture in future. The assuring words calmed down the anger of the hot tempered citizens and they left the place, albeit, murmuring threatening words.

POLITICS BEING PLAYED IN WATER SUPPLY:

The area citizens and Youth Congress leader Shrikant Kaikade charged the NMC office-bearers of playing politics in the water supply on the grounds of privatization of water supply even before of Summer. Some Corporators of a specific party were recommending where to send the water tankers. Chaos is being created on the excuse of network and non-network of water tankers, charged the citizens and the Youth Congress leader.

DEPUTY COMMISSIONER DISTANCES HIMSELF:

The citizens had first complained to the Zone’s Deputy Commissioner about the poor water supply to the area. But he conveniently distanced himself from the problem by giving an excuse of privatization of water supply. Similarly, officials of NMC’s Water Works Department cold shouldered their responsibility in this connection.
