Chaos at Nagpur’s LIC Square as rival beggar groups clash, hurl stones in public

Nagpur: Panic gripped the busy LIC Square and Kasturchand Park area of Nagpur on Thursday evening after two groups of beggars allegedly engaged in a violent street clash, creating chaos in the middle of heavy traffic movement.

The shocking incident reportedly occurred around 5.40 pm near the LIC Square traffic signal, one of the city’s busiest junctions.

According to eyewitnesses, beggars were present at the signal as usual when an argument broke out between two groups over an unknown issue. Within moments, the dispute escalated into a violent confrontation, with members of both groups allegedly attacking each other using stones and wooden sticks.

The sudden violence in the middle of the road triggered panic among commuters, motorists and pedestrians passing through the area. Though no passerby was injured in the stone-pelting, some persons from both groups reportedly sustained injuries during the clash.

Social activist and Sarang Cultural Foundation president Sarang Dhok claimed that despite informing the police, there was a delay in police response. He later sent videos and photographs of the incident to Nagpur Police Commissioner Dr Ravinder Singal, demanding immediate action.

Dhok also raised concerns over the increasing number of beggars at city traffic signals, alleging that many frequently force motorists to give money, abuse commuters and create nuisance in public places. He urged the administration to launch stricter measures to make Nagpur free from organized begging activities.

Notably, just two days ago, Nagpur Police had launched “Mission Mukti,” under which more than 28 beggars were reportedly rescued and sent to rehabilitation facilities in Amravati, while others were shifted to shelter homes. However, Thursday’s violent street clash has raised questions over the effectiveness of the ongoing campaign.
