Chain Snatching Case Cracked Within 24 Hours

Nagpur: Displaying swift action and sharp surveillance skills, the Chain Snatching Prevention Squad of the Nagpur Crime Branch cracked a chain-snatching case within just 24 hours and arrested the accused involved in the crime reported under Sadar Police Station limits.

Police also recovered stolen gold ornaments and other material collectively valued at around Rs 2.40 lakh from the accused.

According to police, the incident took place on May 19, 2026, between 3.30 pm and 3.45 pm at Pradeep Nursery located opposite St. Ursula School near VCA Chowk.

The victim woman was reportedly selling saplings at the nursery when the accused arrived posing as a customer. Taking advantage of the situation, he allegedly snatched her gold mangalsutra weighing around 13 grams and fled from the spot.

Investigators said the accused fell from his motorcycle while escaping, but still managed to flee before locals could catch him.

Following the complaint, Sadar Police registered an offence under Crime No. 240/2026 and launched an investigation.

Considering the seriousness of the offence, the Chain Snatching Prevention Squad simultaneously initiated a parallel probe. With the help of CCTV footage, technical intelligence, and cyber surveillance inputs, police successfully traced the accused within a day.

The arrested accused was identified as Rohit Nemaji Marbate (25), a resident of Bhavani Nagar near Avchat Hanuman Temple in Pardi, Nagpur.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to committing the crime.

Police recovered the stolen gold mangalsutra worth approximately Rs 1.50 lakh, a black Honda Unicorn motorcycle (MH-49-BT-3924) used in the offence valued at around Rs 70,000, and a Vivo mobile phone worth nearly Rs 20,000. The total seized property is estimated at Rs 2.40 lakh.

After medical examination, the accused was handed over to Sadar Police for further legal action.

Police officials said the cyber team played a crucial role in tracing the accused and solving the case quickly.

The prompt action by the Chain Snatching Prevention Squad has drawn appreciation from citizens across the city.
