    Caterer, 5 cooks booked in food poisoning case at birthday party

    G T Memorial Hospital , Pande Layout and Dr Karmarkar Hospital, Pande LayoutNagpur: A caterer and his five cooks have been booked by Sonegaon police on the charges of utter negligence causing food poisoning to nearly 120 people at a birthday party held in a Jaiprakash Nagar hall here on Monday (May 30) night. The affected persons were admitted to different hospitals after taking ill. The police action comes after one of the food poisoning victims registered a case against the accused caterer.

    The accused have been identified as Anand Keshav Bhagwat (caterer), resident of Gopalnagar, Prakash Tukaram Chaudhary of Gopalnagar, Durgesh Chamanlal Ahake of Chhindwara (MP), Sunil Pritam Irpachi of Seoni (MP), Ramkhilavan  Badiram Chaudhary of Multai (MP) and Sadhu Dubey, all cooks. The accused were responsible for preparing food at the birthday party that was being organized at Dattopant Thengdi Sabhagruha in Jaiprakash Nagar. However, the accused, while preparing the food did not take proper care and thus caused food poisoning to at least 120 people after they consumed the arsenic preparation. The affected persons were later admitted to different hospitals where doctors reportedly confirmed food poisoning as the cause of illness. Subsequently, one of the affected persons Shubhangi Madan Badegaonkar (48), resident of Shivmahima Apartment, Pande Layout, who had attended the birthday party along with her daughter, registered a case against the six accused at Sonegaon Police Station.

    PSI Bansod, acting on the complaint, booked the six accused under Sections 336, 337 of IPC and investigating the matter further. The food samples were sent to laboratories for analysis.

    It may be recalled, Nagpur Today had flashed a report titled 120 hospitalised after consuming food at B’day party in Jaiprakash Nagar stating a birthday bash in Jaiprakash Nagar in Sonegaon area turned tragic as nearly 120 people who visited the party were taken ill after allegedly consuming food. The incident happened when the guests started developing nausea and suffered stomach ache after having food at the party. All of them have been rushed to the nearby hospitals which include Shri Venkatesh Hospital, Pande Layout, Arogyam Hospital, Rajeev Nagar, G T Memorial Hospital, Pande Layout and Dr Karmarkar Hospital, Pande Layout. The party was allegedly organized at Dattopant Thengli Sabhagruha in Jaiprakash Nagar, Sonegaon area.
