Nagpur: Two children and some residents of Hanuman Nagar area of Nagpur had a lucky escape recently after a group of stray dogs tried to attack them. The children and residents were saved by some vigilant local women, who frightened the dogs away. The incident was caught on a CCTV camera in the area, where the dogs can be seen trying to attack a terrified 6-year-old boy.
The residents claimed that they have been living this nightmare for months, and demanded Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) should make some permanent arrangement for the dogs, like moving them to shelters, so they do not roam on the streets.
The mother of the boy who was attacked, said they were returning from the garden when the dogs tried to attack her son. The kid was walking ahead of them. The dogs suddenly started barking and tried to attack him. Thankfully, some of the women in the area saw the scared child and managed to save him, said the mother who was also attacked by the dogs later but was saved by other women.
The video of the incident was shared by a local journalist on X (formerly twitter) and attracted many comments from Nagpurians. Many users have also shared the video and demanded immediate action against stray dogs.
One of the locals said that residents had been facing this menace for months and a mishap can happen any time. “If a child dies because of a stray dog attack or any accident happens then who will be responsible? We approached NMC but they said that there are laws to protect animals. Many dog lovers and NGOs intervene if NMC tries to act. These dog lovers should get licenses to take care of these stray dogs and keep them in shelters. They should be kept away from the streets, or a major incident will definitely happen. Animal lovers feed the dogs because of which they stay in the area,” said the local.
This is not an isolated incident. At many locations in the city dog bite incidents and accidents have happened because of stray dogs. People have even lost their lives after meeting with accidents while trying to evade stray dogs on roads.
