Brave cop jumps into Ambazari Lake, saves drowning girl

In an act of daredevilry, a police constable jumped into Ambazari Lake and saved a 19-year old girl who apparently tried to commit suicide. The brave policeman was on Saturday was felicitated by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1) for his exemplary action.

The incident occurred on October 16, 2015. A team of two police constables Krushna Nitnavare and Santosh Matey, attached to Charlie Squad No. 3 of Ambazari Police Station, was on patrolling duty near Crazy Castle. The two cops suddenly heard people at Ambazari Lake ramp shouting “Save, save.” Consequent to the cries, police constables Nitnavare and Matey rushed to the ramp only to told that a girl had jumped into the lake and was drowning.

Without wasting a moment and without caring for his own life, Santosh Matey plunged into the lake and managed to get hold of the drowning girl and bring her to the shores safely as well. Later, the two cops immediately alerted the Police Control Room about the incident.

The girl was taken to Ambazari Police Station in Patrolling Mobile Van No. 2 and handed over to the Day Officer. The Day Officer, on his part, searched the relatives of the girl and thereafter handed over to her father.

For this brave act of exemplary nature, the Police Constable Santosh Matey was awarded and felicitated at the hands of DCP (Zone-1) Shailesh Balkawde.
