Boat carrying Maharashtra chief secretary capsizes off Mumbai coast, all safe

A boat carrying Maharashtra government officials, including the chief secretary, capsized near near the location of the proposed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue off the Mumbai coast on Wednesday evening.

The Indian Coast Guard said a rescue operation was launched and all the people on board were brought to safety. It had pressed a hovercraft and choppers for the rescue operation.

According to the information available so far, the boat, which belongs to the Maharashtra government, overturned around 2.6 km away from Nariman Point.

The officials were on their way to the site where the statue is being built in the Arabian Sea off Mumbais Marine Drive when the mishap took place. Larsen & Toubro, who was awarded the contract, was supposed to begin work on the statue today. An event planned to mark the commencement of work has been cancelled.
