Bihar flood: Death toll mounts to 153

With a loss of 34 more lives in last twenty hours the toll of lives claimed by Bihar floods has reached over 150. With 15 districts of the state inundated due to onrush of water, the number of those marooned and affected has now reached to as high as 1 crore.

With major rivers in spate and breaching banks, inundating fresh areas and displacing thousands since Thursday night, houses have been destroyed, buildings damaged and bridges and roads besides standing crops worth crores of rupees have been severely hit.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar reviewed the flood situation and gave necessary instruction to officials. He gave orders for intensive airdropping of food packets in Kursakanta, Palasi, Sikti and Jokihaat in Araria and the Sugauli area in East Champaran, an official statement said.

A Bihar Disaster Management Department official said a total of 108 lakh people spread over 1,688 panchayats had been affected by the floods.
