The Chairman of NMC’s Standing Committee Narendra (Balya) Borkar is likely to face Election Commission rap for holding a high-level Tax Department meeting and thus violating Model Code of Conduct being in force the day Lok Sabha poll schedule was announced. Earlier, the Health Committee Chairman Ramesh Singare and the Water Works Committee Chairman Sudhakar Kohale had violated the Code of Conduct for similar reasons.

According to sources, the Standing Committee chief Balya Borkar held a meeting of Tax Department apparently not informing the Election Commission. The Model Code of Conduct bars any meeting of Government officials wherein policy decisions or important announcements are formulated. However, Balya Borkar held a meeting of Tax Department in which Standing Committee members and officials were present. Sources said that Balya Borkar might face problems for violating the code of conduct in force.

The Chairman not only held the meeting but took a major decision to interact with citizens and create awareness on tax payment that would help increase the tax collection of NMC. He informed the meeting that after Lok Sabha elections, zone-wise camps would be organized in the city in order to impose tax on various other civic services. He further said that the plan would be implemented on a large scale post elections. Borkar said that a meeting would be organized every week to review tax collection.

Holding of the meeting and subsequent announcement of policy decisions by Borkar may draw a severe reprimand from the local Electoral Officer as it is clear violation of code of conduct.
