Nagpur: In a daring escape, a goldsmith managed to flee from the custody of the Pune police while onboard the Howrah-Pune Duronto Express.

According to a report in a local English daily, the incident occurred between the Narendra Nagar and Khapri stations, where the accused, identified as Sanjay Kumar Jana, apparently jumped off the train as it slowed down. Jana’s escape was facilitated by creating an escape route through a toilet window of the train, which he had reportedly manipulated before making his move. The goldsmith was arrested along with his aide by Pune police from East Midnapore in West Bengal,

The incident came to light when the police discovered that Jana was taking an unusually long time inside the train’s toilet and was unresponsive to their calls. Sensing something amiss, the authorities alerted railway personnel and security forces. Upon forcefully opening the door, they found that Jana had removed the rubber strip of the window panel and bent the glass cover to make his exit.

Jana’s escape has resulted in the Pune police registering a fresh offense against him at the Government Railway Police (GRP) Station in Nagpur. The police have also ensured the return of Jana’s accomplice, Saurabh Maity, who was initially arrested alongside him. The duo had been accused of absconding with 380 grams of gold entrusted to them by a bullion trader for the creation of jewellery. CCTV footage captured Jana fleeing with the gold, leading to the registration of an offense at the Faraskhana police station in Pune on May 4.

In their pursuit of the fugitive goldsmith, the Nagpur GRP team and Pune police conducted extensive searches in nearby hospitals, clinics, and dispensaries, suspecting that Jana may have sustained injuries during his escape. Jana’s ability to slip through the narrow gap created in the window was attributed to his slim body frame.

Efforts are underway to apprehend Sanjay Kumar Jana and bring him back into custody. The incident has raised questions about the security measures on trains and the need for enhanced vigilance to prevent such escapes in the future. Authorities are expected to review protocols and take necessary steps to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.
