Nagpur: A 55-year-old man from Amravati district has made a remarkable recovery after undergoing a complex liver surgery at Shalinitai Meghe Hospital & Research Centre (SMHRC), Wanadongri, Nagpur—highlighting how advanced, life-saving procedures are increasingly becoming accessible to ordinary citizens through public healthcare support.
The patient was admitted with progressive abdominal discomfort and generalized weakness. Detailed clinical evaluation and advanced imaging revealed a large mass in the left lobe of the liver, raising strong suspicion of malignancy. After multidisciplinary deliberations, doctors advised a left hepatectomy—a major surgical resection of the liver—to completely remove the lesion and prevent future complications.
The surgery was carried out with meticulous planning and precision, resulting in complete excision of the diseased liver segment while preserving adequate healthy tissue. The procedure was completed with minimal blood loss and stable intraoperative parameters, reflecting seamless coordination between surgical, anaesthesia, nursing, and support teams.
The operation was led by Dr. Sudhir Tomey, Senior GI Surgeon & Adjunct Faculty, along with Dr. Rajiv Sonarkar, Professor & Head – Surgery, supported by a dedicated team of GI surgeons, senior surgeons, residents, anaesthesiologists, nursing staff, OT technicians, and the blood bank unit.
Speaking on the importance of early intervention, Sudhir Tomey said that liver masses suspected to be malignant demand prompt diagnosis and definitive surgical management. A well-planned hepatectomy, he noted, offers the best chance of cure and significantly improves long-term quality of life—especially when backed by strong multidisciplinary coordination.
Providing an update on recovery, Rajiv Sonarkar confirmed that the patient demonstrated excellent postoperative progress. Pain was well controlled, liver function parameters improved steadily, and early mobilization was achieved. Notably, the entire postoperative course was managed in the Surgery ward without ICU admission. Within days, the patient regained appetite and strength and was discharged in stable, symptom-free condition.
Professor & CMS Vasant Gawande emphasized that SMHRC delivers comprehensive and ethical care through a structured hierarchy of specialists and senior adjunct mentors. While the ambience may not resemble five-star private hospitals, he said, the standard of medical care remains robust and affordable. He also highlighted that this case marks SMHRC’s first successful left hepatectomy performed completely free of cost under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY)—a significant milestone for the institution’s expanding hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal surgical services.
Commenting on the achievement, Anup Marar, Director of Datta Meghe Institute of Higher Education & Research (DMIHER) – Nagpur Off Campus, said the successful procedure reflects the growing clinical maturity of SMHRC’s surgical teams and the institution’s commitment to delivering high-end, super-speciality care closer to home. He added that the hospital aims to develop into a center of excellence for complex surgeries offered at minimal or no cost under government schemes, while maintaining strict standards of patient safety and outcomes.
The patient’s family expressed heartfelt gratitude to SMHRC for performing such a major operation entirely free of cost. “For us, this support was a blessing. The doctors, nurses, and staff treated us with compassion and gave our loved one a new chance at life,” a relative said.
The successful surgery stands as a strong testament to SMHRC’s progress in advanced hepatobiliary care and its continued focus on clinical excellence, teamwork, and patient-centered treatment in Nagpur and the wider Vidarbha region.
