Nagpur: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday laid the foundation stone for the permanent campus of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) at Chicholi in Kamptee tehsil, further strengthening Nagpur’s profile as a centre of higher learning and national importance. Simultaneously, Shah also inaugurated the university’s fully functional transit campus at Subhash Nagar, located opposite Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT).

The Nagpur facility marks the 11th campus of NFSU and the second in Maharashtra after Pune. Established as a premier institute under the Ministry of Home Affairs, NFSU is the world’s only university dedicated exclusively to forensic sciences and plays a crucial role in enhancing India’s internal security ecosystem.

The event witnessed the presence of several top dignitaries, including Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, State Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, MLA Ashish Deshmukh, Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Iqbal Singh Chahal, Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari, and NFSU Vice-Chancellor Dr. J.M. Shah also participated in a tree plantation drive on the Chicholi campus before departing for Nanded.

“The Nagpur campus will not only strengthen the capabilities of law enforcement agencies through scientific methods but also speed up the justice delivery system,” said Dr. Vyas, a Padma Shri awardee and founding Vice-Chancellor of NFSU. He emphasized that the campus would open up a host of new career opportunities for students across western India.

Starting from the academic year 2025–26, the Nagpur campus will offer five specialised programmes, including MSc in Forensic Science, BTech and MTech in Cyber Security, and BBA and MBA degrees with a focus on forensic and management disciplines.

The temporary campus, now operational at Subhash Nagar, is equipped with modern infrastructure including smart classrooms, cyber security and toxicology labs, a digital forensics lab, seminar halls, a library, hostels, dining areas, and indoor sports facilities. Recreational amenities like table tennis and volleyball courts are also available.

A short film screened during the event showcased NFSU’s expanding footprint, including its international campus in Uganda. The upcoming 50-acre permanent facility at Chicholi will feature academic and residential blocks, faculty quarters, lecture halls, departmental units, and full-fledged sports infrastructure.

Founded in 2009 by Narendra Modi during his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister, NFSU now has campuses across Gujarat, Delhi, Goa, Tripura, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Assam, Manipur, Pune, and Uganda.

‘Modi Govt revolutionised healthcare infrastructure’: Amit Shah

In a separate engagement earlier in the day, Amit Shah laid the foundation of ‘Swasti Niwas’—a residential complex for cancer patients and their families—at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Nagpur.

Addressing the gathering, Shah highlighted the Modi government’s strides in healthcare. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has witnessed remarkable improvements in health infrastructure. Around 60 crore economically weaker citizens are receiving free health coverage up to Rs 5 lakh through Ayushman Bharat,” he said.

Drawing a comparison with previous regimes, Shah added, “After independence, only seven AIIMS were established in the country. But in the last decade, 23 new AIIMS have been approved under the Modi government, reflecting its commitment to public health.”
