Nagpur: In a major push to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in Central India, the foundation stone for the upcoming National Health Care Institute (NHCI) was laid on Friday by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in Nagpur.

The project, spearheaded by the Dr Aabaji Thatte Sewa Aur Anusandhan Sanstha, the same body behind the renowned National Cancer Institute Nagpur, is being positioned as a transformative healthcare hub for the region.

Strategically located near Alankar Square, the proposed 450-bed facility will span nearly 5 lakh square feet, aiming to cater not only to Nagpur but also to adjoining districts and neighbouring states. With a combination of multi-speciality and super-speciality services, NHCI is expected to bridge critical gaps in advanced medical care.

23 floors of advanced care

A detailed presentation by General Secretary Shailesh Joglekar offered a glimpse into the details of the project. The planned 23-storey structure will focus on key departments including women and child healthcare, organ transplants, gastroenterology, cardiovascular care, and burn treatment, areas that often require specialised infrastructure and expertise.

Highlighting safety and accessibility, Joglekar noted that the facility will include a large-scale emergency exit system to handle high patient volumes efficiently. Notably, the institute also plans to introduce an air ambulance service, a first-of-its-kind initiative for the city, aimed at reducing critical response time.

NHCI is not just being envisioned as a hospital but as a full-fledged academic institution. It will offer postgraduate and super-speciality courses, contributing to the development of skilled medical professionals and strengthening the region’s healthcare ecosystem.

Global expertise, local impact

The project brings together international and national expertise. Singapore-based HKS Asia Pacific Design Consulting has been appointed as Concept Design Architect, while Mumbai’s M/s JJ Consultants will serve as Principal Architects. Tata Consulting Engineers Limited is overseeing project management.

The bhoomipujan ceremony was graced by several other dignitaries including Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister; Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister; Bhaiyyaji Joshi, former RSS Sarkaryavah; Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Guardian Minister; Adv Ashish Jaiswal, Minister of State; Adv Sunil Manohar, President; Ajay Sancheti, Vice President; Ashish Deshpande; and Treasurer Anand Aurangabadkar, all office-bearers of Dr Aabaji Thatte Sewa Aur Anusandhan Sanstha.

With its advanced planning, and focus on both treatment and education, NHCI represents a significant step toward making Nagpur a major healthcare destination. If executed as planned, the institute could redefine access to quality medical care across Central India.
