Nagpur: After clearing multiple hurdles and prolonged delays, the state Public Works Department (PWD) is all set to commence construction of a new underpass at the congested Ajni Bridge Square within the next week. This will be the first instance in the city where an underpass is built beneath a busy junction while keeping the surface roads operational to ensure continued traffic movement.
Despite this, officials cautioned that commuters may face traffic disruptions once excavation work begins, as Ajni Bridge Square witnesses heavy vehicular flow from Congress Nagar Square, FCI Road and Kriplani Square along Wardha Road. The underpass forms part of a ₹35-crore project, which also includes widening the Ajni Bridge–TB Ward Square stretch into a six-lane road.
Once completed, the upgraded corridor will integrate seamlessly with the under-construction Ajni twin cable-stayed bridges being developed by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), significantly improving connectivity between South and Central Nagpur.
A senior PWD official confirmed that all procedural formalities have been completed and construction will begin within a week. “Vehicles coming from Ajni Railway Station will use the underpass to cross towards the FCI side, while the existing upper road leading to the bridge will remain unchanged,” the official said.
The project had earlier faced delays due to land acquisition issues involving multiple agencies, including Central Railway, South East Central Railway and Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). At present, the Ajni Bridge–TB Ward Square road width ranges between 18 and 24 metres and largely functions as a two-lane stretch. Under the new project, it will be expanded to a uniform width of 30 metres.
