Nagpur: After witnessing the havoc caused by unplanned and haphazard construction of cement roads that triggered water-logging and flooding of numerous homes in various localities during recent rains in Nagpur, a large number of activists have raised a vociferous voice: NO MORE CEMENT ROADS in Nagpur.
The activists have started an online petition to raise the demand for No More Cement Roads in Nagpur. Terming the construction of cement roads as a SCAM, the activists warned that apart from water logging during rains and impact on environment, Nagpur is likely to face drinking water crisis and choking of sewage lines as networks are buried under the cement roads.
Even the Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari attributed the widespread water-logging during the rains on July 20 to cement roads with raised elevation, and inadequate drainage infrastructure. He also mentioned that the heavy rainfall on July 20 resulted in the submergence of approximately 456 areas, damaging properties of over 10,000 residents across the city.
The NMC Boss said that Nagpur roads are owned and maintained by multiple agencies like NHAI, State PWD, Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), and NMC. However, only NMC is being blamed for bad roads, he said.

However, some experts said the problem is of NMC’s own creation — of unscientifically designed and arrogantly built roads that are among the major reasons causing so much of flooding and water-logging in the city, Now that the popular sentiment has risen to a dangerous level, the civic authorities now appear to have come around to agreeing that a genuine solution needs to be found.
Most Nagpurians might be already seeing erratic constructions of cement roads all around the city and outskirts of the city. The concerned authorities did not leave out any lane or corner of the city without having a cement road whether it’s a main road or a small lane. While prima facie it looks to be a “Development” happening, but if the citizens deep dive into the basics of road infrastructures there are more disadvantages of cement roads than that of tar roads.
NO MORE CEMENT ROADS is the war cry of Nagpurians!
