Nagpur: After prolonged pandemic, while citizens of Kamptee are making efforts to meet their ends, exorbitant property tax has added another woe in their problems. Citizens living under Kamptee Municipal Council (KMC) have been levied property tax, around 4-5 folds compared to the last year’s tax.

Taken aback by exorbitant property tax, citizens are thronging KMC with their grievances; but, to no avail. Kamptee residents have complained of no uniformity on various taxes levied by the KMC and also alleged that 4-5 times increase in the tax amount compared to previous years.

Notably, KMC had recently surveyed houses through a private agency. Locals claimed that the survey was superficial. There was no discussion of any kind with the residents, owners had contended. This was followed by an increase in tax amount after the pandemic leaving many locals confused and furious as well.

Speaking to Nagpur Today, Nikhil Dongre, who runs a newspaper agency, claimed that this ridiculous tax hike has affected his finances in the post Covid era.

“We’ve already suffered a lot during the devastating novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) waves. After suffering tremendous loss in revenue, we were just starting to get back on track but the KMC administration has delivered a ruthless blow on us in the form of hiked property tax,” he said.

When Nagpur Today took up the issue to KMC Chief Officer (CO) Sandeep Borkar, he said that, “The tax assessment is done every five years. However, for the past couple of times it was missed and this time, it’s done after 10 years. This, perhaps, could be the reason behind the increased amount. However, if people have any objection, they should approach KMC. Their grievances will be addressed,” he assured.
