Citizens must have heard or read some women stealing new born babies from maternity wards of hospitals with ulterior motives. But in an incident, a mother herself left her one and a half month baby girl at the Maternity Ward of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and fled the spot. The incident came to the fore at 3 pm on Wednesday.

The unidentified woman with the baby girl arrived at the OPD of GMCH but since Wednesday was holiday on account of Mahalaxmi Puja, it was closed. The woman roamed around the OPD for 3-4 hours and then slyly left her baby near the Maternity Ward and escaped. However, all her activities were being noticed by some relatives of other patients in the Maternity Ward. As soon as the woman left her baby in the Ward, they chased the woman but lost her midway. Some persons then immediately informed the security guards of GMCH about the incident who in turn alerted the police. However, even the police could not trace the woman. Finally, the baby girl was admitted to Children’s Ward for further care. Police are trying to trace the woman with the help of description provided by the relatives of other patients.
