Nagpur: The Fire and Emergency Services Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has reportedly declared Vidarbha Sahitya Sangh Sanskrutik Sankul as unsafe due to lack of adequate fire prevention measures at the complex, according to a report in a local daily. Thousands of shoppers as well as students daily visit the complex which has many coaching centres, the report added.

According to the report, the construction work of the four-storey complex located at Jhansi Rani Square in Nagpur has been dragging on for 27 years. The Shop Owners’ Association of the complex has accused the builder of not completing the fire-fighting system in the building. Now, The NMC’s Fire Department has issued notices to the shopkeepers to vacate the shops saying the building is unsafe. There are 319 shops in the complex. The Fire Department has served notices to 57 shopkeepers apart from issuing a letter to Sitabuldi police for vacating the shops, the report added.

Following the development, the shopkeepers are a worried lot. They claimed that it was the responsibility of the builder to install the fire-fighting system. They further claimed that the builder had just placed some pipes in the name of installing a fire system after receiving NMC notices earlier. Till now work on the fire-fighting system has not been completed and now they are facing the NMC heat, the shopkeepers lamented.

According to the report, the Administrator of Vidarbha Sahitya Sangh (VSS), office-bearers of Shop Owners Association and shopkeepers had held a meeting on Tuesday after receiving the notices from NMC’s Fire Department. They have decided to take legal action against those responsible for the situation. Officials of Sitabuldi Police Station were also present in the meeting, the report added.
