The Maharashtra government on Monday decided to start a multi-specialty hospital with 568 beds and postgraduate courses at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Research Centre in Indora, Nagpur. This will be the first multi-specialty government hospital in Nagpur.
The decision was taken in the Cabinet meeting held here considering growing population in the city, which stands at 26 lakh now. The Centre only provides OPD facility for patients in the area that is dominated by scheduled castes with 40 per cent population belo-nging to that category.

“The decision has been taken to upgrade the centre by spending 209 crore in the next five years,” a release from the CMO said. The facility will provide necessary medical assistance, not only in Nagpur area, but also for the entire Vidarbha region, it said. Even the poor patients have to approach the private hospitals, which are costly and unaffordable sometimes, it added.
Later, water conservation minister Nitin Raut expressed gratitude over the decision. “This will definitely benefit patients and will also increase capacity of medical students in the state. Nagpur is the second capital of the state and it needs more health facilities,” Mr Raut said.
