Nagpur,: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Orange City Water (OCW) are continuously striving to provide safe, clean, and pure drinking water to the citizens of Nagpur. However, illegal tap connections have emerged as a major obstacle to this essential service. Even a single illegal tap connection can contaminate the water supply in an entire neighborhood, putting hundreds of lives at risk. Citizens are therefore urged to stay vigilant, report such unauthorized connections, and help protect the city.
Illegal tap connections can contaminate water in several ways. One such method is “illegal tapping,” where a water pipeline in active supply is drilled illegally to create an unsafe connection. This is extremely dangerous because these joints are often unsealed, unfiltered, and prone to leakage, leading to sediment/debris (scaling) accumulation inside the pipeline.
Furthermore, due to low water pressure or intermittent supply, a phenomenon called back-siphonage can occur, where contaminated water from outside is sucked into the pipeline. This causes reverse water flow, drawing in dirty water from nearby drains or sewage lines.
Such illegal connections are often found in densely populated areas with poor drainage, where sewage or wastewater accumulates around pipelines. At tapping points with cracks or leaks, harmful bacteria and viruses can easily infiltrate the water supply, causing waterborne diseases like diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, hepatitis, and dysentery. Unauthorized settlements with inadequate drainage are particularly prone to these risks.
What can you do? The solution is in our hands:
• Apply for a legal, metered water connection from NMC–OCW.
• Report unauthorized connections to OCW’s helpline: 1800 266 9899.
• Cooperate with the ongoing disconnection drive.
These steps will help reduce water theft, improve water pressure, and ensure fair distribution for all.
In addition to legal consequences and disconnection actions by the authorities, illegal connections pose a direct threat to the health and safety of your children, family, and community. Therefore, citizens are strongly encouraged to oppose such practices and cooperate with the administration to ensure a safe, healthy, and sustainable water supply.
This is a sincere appeal from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Orange City Water (OCW).
