Nagpur: Greed for easy money cost a 77-year old man dearly as he lost Rs 12.78 lakh for winning Rs 1.80 crore ‘lottery prize’. Forget the lottery money, the tricksters rendered the illiterate man poorer by lakhs. Despite police warning of bogus lottery prizes, gullible people continue to fall prey to conmen who operate such racket through mobile phones and other cyber crimes.

In the instant case, the victim Dashrath Domaji Kamble (77), resident of Plot No. 427, Kukde Layout, near NIT Garden, received a call from 923451624790 on June 16, 2014. The unidentified caller informed Dashrath that he has won Rs 1.80 crore ‘lottery prize’ and for receiving the prize money, he will have to deposit money transfer charge and other expenses in various bank accounts. ‘Delighted’ over winning the ‘lottery prize, Dashrath deposited a total of Rs 12.78 lakh in various bank accounts between June 2014 and January 2018 as told by the trickster from time to time. However, Dashrath waited and waited to see the whopping ‘lottery prize’ money in his bank account. But it never occurred. Realising that he had been taken for a long ride costing Rs 12.78 lakh, Dashrath finally reached Ajni police and lodged a complaint.

Ajni Woman PSI S U Mandvale has booked the unidentified trickster under Sections 420, 34 of the IPC read with Section 66(D) of IT Act and probing the matter further.
