Nagpur: Safety of passengers and their belongings took a severe beating in the year 2017.
A total 721 persons died on account of various Railway mishaps that occurred under the jurisdiction of Government Railway Police, Nagpur, in 2017. Even safety of valuables belonging to travellers has been seriously compromised as 6,133 theft cases were registered under the jurisdiction of GRP Nagpur in the same period.
The disturbing data was obtained by RTI activist Abhay Kolarkar regarding a query posed to Superintendent of Police, GRP. The jurisdiction of GRP Nagpur comprises from Gondia to Igatpuri. The jurisdiction of Nagpur GRP extends up to 3560 kilometres in Maharashtra. Total 23 districts come under the jurisdiction of GRP Nagpur.
The GRP also seized 515 kg of ganja worth Rs 43.78 lakh in 27 incidents. 18 male and 2 female drug peddlers were arrested in these cases. Police registered 6,133 offences of theft in trains and arrested 15 accused in 2017. Cops had registered 2014 offences of theft and arrested 9 accused till March 2018.
