6 students injured as speeding truck rams Podar International School van in parking area

Nagpur: At least 6 students of Besa-based Podar International School were injured when a recklessly driven tipper truck crashed onto the school van at the parking area of the school on Saturday morning. The students were disembarking from the school van when the truck rammed it. Many students had lucky escape as the speed of the truck was curbed due to railing and trees around the parking area of the school. Had the truck free run the mishap would have been of terrible magnitude. The injured students were taken to Yashodha Hospital in Besa where their condition was stated to be out of danger.

Dr Sudhir Adhav of the hospital said six students of Podar International School were brought to the hospital on Saturday morning. The Principal and other teachers were accompanying the students. Two students suffered serious injuries while others had bruises. But after the treatment, all the students were out of danger. One student with fracture was referred to an orthopaedic specialist. The six students who were brought to the hospital are Satvik Shukla (7), Sukhrup Channe (12), Adi Wagh (13), Tanishk Popuri (17), Swara Jangir (13) and Navansh Wankhede (11).

The school Principal Jeenat Sayyed said that the students were coming to school as usual on Saturday morning. She had herself reached the school around 8.20 am. Whe she received information about the accident, she rushed to the parking area and took the injured students to the hospital. For the safety point of view, the parking area is at a far distance from the road. The tipper truck skiided off the road and entered the parking area of the school. When the driver was caught, he seemed to be in inebriated condition, the Principal said.

Tension ran high after the mishap as a mob of angry people pulled out the tipper truck driver and thrashed him severely. Timely intervention by police brought the situation under control and averted untoward incident. The mishap occurred under Hudkeshwar police jurisdiction. Police Inspector S B Mane had personally came to the spot. Mane said as the people suspected the driver under influence of liquor, he was taken to GMCH and his medical was done. The medical report did not confirm consumption of liquor. The PI Mane told Nagpur Today that the truck driver was patient of mirgi (fainting). The fact is being checked with the medical record of the accused driver who has been identified as Maruti Kawde (28).

The incident invited public outrage against the school van drivers who have been under radar for their incomplete verification by school authorities as well as their rough driving. “Many parents have complained to Podar school administration about mushrooming school vans without any trained drivers. But the school authorities had always lent a deaf ear to such complaints and often shrugged responsibility of this transporation off their shoulders,” said a parent whose ward was also on board one of the damaged vans.

Meanwhile, as soon as he got information about the mishap, the Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule rushed to the spot and apprised himself about details from school administration. He also visited the injured students.
