4 kg ganja seized in midnight ‘Operation Thunder’ drive; youth held in Sakkardara

Nagpur: Under the special anti-drug campaign “Operation Thunder – Let Us Unite to Build a Drug-Free Society,” launched at the initiative of Police Commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singal, the Crime Branch has intensified action against those involved in the sale, possession and consumption of narcotics across Nagpur.

In a late-night operation between 11.55 pm on February 13 and 2.30 am on February 14, officers of Crime Branch Unit No. 4 were patrolling when they received credible information about a youth transporting narcotics near the NIT ground at Bidi Peth under Sakkardara police limits.

Acting on the tip-off, the team laid a trap on the public road near the NIT ground and intercepted a TVS Jupiter moped (MH-49-BX-1539). The rider was identified as Aditya Ravindra Nanotkar (21), a resident of New Bidi Peth, behind Shani Mandir, Nagpur.

During a search conducted in the presence of panch witnesses, police recovered two plastic bags containing 4 kg and 190 grams of green-coloured ganja from his possession.

Police seized the contraband along with a mobile phone, a weighing scale and the moped used in the crime. The total value of the seized property is estimated at Rs 1,81,250.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly revealed that he had procured the ganja with the help of his associate, Rahul Gole, a resident of Bhande Plot, Sakkardara, Nagpur, who is currently absconding.

Police said the accused was carrying the narcotic substance with the intention of selling it for financial gain.

A case has been registered at Sakkardara Police Station under Sections 8(c), 20(b)(ii)(A), and 29 of the NDPS Act. The accused has been arrested, and efforts are underway to trace the absconding accomplice.

Further investigation is in progress as part of the ongoing Operation Thunder drive to curb the narcotics trade in the city.
