2002 Gujarat riots case: The Supreme Court today directed the Gujarat government to pay a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to gang-rape survivor Bilkis Bano. The court also directed the Gujarat government to give her a government job and accommodation as per rules.
The Supreme Court last month asked the Gujarat government to take disciplinary action in two weeks against the erring police officials, including an IPS officer, convicted by the Bombay High Court in the 2002 gang-rape case during the 2002 riots.
On March 3, 2002, Bilkis Bano, who was then 19 and pregnant, was raped during the riots that broke out in Randhikpur village in Dahod district. In 2008, a sessions court had awarded life imprisonment to 11 men, of which three were convicted of raping her.
