Yellow Alert Issued as Heatwave Returns to Vidarbha

Nagpur: Barely a week after a brief spell of weather activity brought temporary relief, Vidarbha is once again reeling under an intense heat surge, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue a ‘Yellow Alert’ for Nagpur, Akola and Amravati districts over looming heatwave conditions.

The mercury climbed sharply across the region on Monday, with Akola emerging as the hottest place in Vidarbha at a blistering 45.1 degrees Celsius. Amravati followed closely at 44 degrees Celsius, while Nagpur touched the 42-degree mark under a cloudless sky, signalling the return of severe summer conditions.

According to the IMD forecast, heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in Nagpur, Akola and Amravati on May 14 and 15, with maximum temperatures expected to remain at least 2.5 degrees Celsius above normal levels. The warning has raised concerns as temperatures continue to rise steadily across the region amid dry weather and intense solar radiation.

The scorching conditions severely affected normal life in Nagpur on Monday, with roads and public spaces wearing a deserted look during peak afternoon hours. Residents struggled with extreme discomfort as hot winds and blazing sunshine gripped the city.

Several other districts in Vidarbha also recorded temperatures above the 40-degree Celsius mark, indicating a widespread heat spell across the region. Bhandara, Buldhana, Brahmapuri, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Wardha, Washim and Yavatmal all witnessed intense daytime heat.

Night temperatures too remained unusually high, offering little respite after sunset. The minimum temperature across Vidarbha stayed above 24 degrees Celsius, while Buldhana recorded the highest night temperature at 27.6 degrees Celsius.

Weather experts said the return of clear skies after the weekend’s atmospheric activity has accelerated surface heating, triggering a fresh rise in temperatures across Central India. The IMD has predicted predominantly dry weather over the next few days, which could further intensify the heatwave-like conditions in districts including Nagpur, Akola, Wardha, Chandrapur and Amravati.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during afternoon hours. Residents have also been advised to stay hydrated, wear light clothing and take preventive measures against heatstroke and dehydration as Vidarbha heads into another spell of punishing summer heat.
