WIPO-India Summer School on Intellectual Property

Nagpur: WIPO Academy, a specialised agency of the United Nations, Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of IP Management, Nagpur (RGNIIPM) and the Maharashtra National Law University Nagpur (MNLUN), have jointly organised the WIPO-India Summer School on Intellectual Property (IP), at Nagpur. The Summer School was inaugurated by by Chief Guest Anoop Kumar, Divisional Commissioner, Nagpur Division on 6th November and is scheduled from November 6 to 17, 2017.On this occasion Anoop Kumar, O.P.Gupta, Controller General of Patents, Designs& Trademarks and Mr. Joseph M. Bradley, Head, Academic Institutions Program, WIPO Academy, Prof(Dr)Vijender Kumar, Vice Chancellor, MNLU and Dr. K.S Kardam Jr. Joint Controller of Patents & Designs were also present. 48Participants from various countries including Bangladesh, Korea, India, South Africa, Dubai are participating in the program.It provides an opportunity to senior students and young professionals to acquire deeper knowledge in the domain of IP.

In the inaugural address, Anoop Kumar emphasizedthe protection of IP, especially the geographical indications, easy registration of IP and efficient enforcement,considering Nagpur as the hub of many more potential geographical indications. O.P.Gupta in his keynote address talked about the objectives of National IPR Policy, 2016. He emphasised that this Summer School will improve the skills of participants and help them to focus on various IP issues. He emphasised the importance of the Summer School as it addressed at least 4 objectives of the said Policy.Prof. (Dr.) Vijender Kumar, while delivering the address specifically emphasised on education and dissemination of IP knowledge and protection of Traditional Knowledge.Mr. Joseph M. Bradley encouraged the delegates and stated that this is not only a great opportunity to know about IP management but it is also a very useful platform that allows participants to interact with people from all over the world on IP issues and this summer school will be held regular affair between the said organizers.
