Wife strangled over character suspicion, husband gets lifer

Son’s complaint leads to conviction in Khaparkheda murder case

Nagpur: In a serious case of domestic murder, the District and Sessions Court in Nagpur has sentenced a 56-year-old man to life imprisonment for strangling his wife to death after suspecting her character.

The verdict was delivered on April 1, 2026, by Anilkumar Sharma, District Judge–7 and Additional Sessions Judge, Nagpur, in Sessions Case No. 137/2024. The court found the accused, Manohar Kashinath Mangate (56), a resident of Ward No. 1, Bhanegaon under Khaparkheda police jurisdiction, guilty of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

The court sentenced the accused to rigorous life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000. In case of failure to pay the fine, he will have to undergo an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, the gruesome crime took place on September 23, 2023, between 3.45 pm and 4.12 pm at the couple’s residence in Ward No. 1 of Bhanegaon village in Saoner taluka of Nagpur district.

The victim, Ranjana Manohar Mangate (52), was allegedly murdered by her husband after he developed suspicions about her character. During the incident, the accused reportedly used a nylon rope to strangle his wife, leading to her death.

The crime came to light after the couple’s son, Anand Manohar Mangate (22), lodged a complaint with Khaparkheda Police Station. Acting on the complaint, police registered a case of murder against the accused.

Investigators later arrested Manohar Mangate on the same day, September 23, 2023.

The investigation in the case was conducted by then Police Sub-Inspector Suryaprakash Mishra, who subsequently filed the charge sheet before the court after completing the probe.

During the trial, the prosecution was represented by public prosecutor Liladhar Shendre, while the defence was argued by advocate A. R. Lambat.

Court liaison work in the case was handled by police constable Rammurat Yadav.

After examining the evidence and witness testimonies, the court concluded that the prosecution had successfully proved the charges against the accused, leading to his conviction and life sentence.

The case highlights yet another tragic instance of domestic violence turning fatal, leaving a family shattered and a son forced to seek justice for his mother’s brutal killing.
