Which loans can you apply for from a personal loan app?

A decade ago, getting a loan meant visiting a bank branch, filling out a stack of forms, and waiting days or weeks for approval. Today, you can borrow money while sitting on your couch. Personal loan apps have become one of the most popular ways Indians access credit, but most borrowers don’t realise how many different types of loans these apps actually offer. The options go well beyond a single lump-sum personal loan.

Instant personal loans

This is the bread and butter of every lending app. An instant personal loan is an unsecured loan, meaning you don’t pledge any asset as collateral. You apply, upload your KYC documents and the funds get credited straight into your bank account. The amounts are usually anything between ₹10,000 and ₹5 lakh for first-time borrowers, although some apps go up to ₹10 lakh or more for repeat customers with a strong repayment history.

Interest rates on these loans typically fall between 11% and 36% per annum, depending on your credit score, income and the risk assessment by the lender. Repayment periods extend from three months to five years. The speed is what makes this option appealing. Several apps disburse funds within minutes of approval, making them handy for medical emergencies, urgent travel or bridging a short-term cash gap.

Salary advance or short-term loans

Some apps offer something like a salary advance. These are small ticket loans, often between ₹5,000 and ₹1 lakh, designed to tide salaried employees over till their next payday. The tenure is short, sometimes just 15 to 30 days.

The appeal is obvious. If your car breaks down on the 20th of the month and your salary hits on the 1st, a salary advance loan covers the gap without forcing you to borrow from friends or max out a credit card. The interest cost on such a small, short-duration loan tends to be modest in absolute terms, though the annualised rate can look high if you do the math. Always check the total repayment amount before accepting.

Credit line or flexi loans

This is where things get interesting. Several apps now offer a pre-approved credit line rather than a fixed-amount loan. Think of it like a personal overdraft. You get a sanctioned limit, say ₹2 lakh, and you can withdraw any portion of it whenever you need. Interest is charged on the withdrawn amount only and not on the sanctioned amount.

This is great if your expenses are irregular. For example, a freelancer who earns different amounts every month might prefer a line of credit over a lump sum personal loan. The flexibility is real, but so is the discipline. Easy access to credit can turn into habitual borrowing if you don’t watch yourself and pay it back quickly..

Consumer durable loans

Many apps have partnered with retailers, both online and offline, to offer point-of-sale financing. Want to buy a smartphone worth ₹40,000 or a washing machine worth ₹25,000? You can use a personal loan app to split the cost into monthly instalments, often at zero or low interest if the brand or retailer is subsidising the rate.

These loans are tied to specific purchases and are disbursed directly to the merchant. You never see the money in your account. The approval process is usually fast, sometimes instant, especially if you already have a relationship with the app. It’s worth noting that “zero-cost EMI” offers sometimes bundle processing fees that effectively function as interest. Read the fine print.

Education and medical loans

A smaller but growing category. Some lending apps offer purpose-specific loans for education expenses or medical bills. These tend to have slightly lower interest rates than a general personal loan because the borrower’s intent is documented and the purpose is considered lower-risk by some lenders.

For medical loans, a few apps have tie-ups with hospital networks, allowing patients to convert large hospital bills into EMIs directly at the billing counter. Education loans on apps are usually for short-term courses, coaching fees, or certification programmes rather than full degree funding, which remains the domain of banks and NBFCs with dedicated education loan products.

Gold loans through apps

This one surprises people, but several fintech apps now facilitate gold loans. You pledge your gold jewellery and receive a loan against its value. Usually, the process involves a visit to a partner branch for gold valuation or a doorstep pickup. Gold loans are often cheaper in terms of interest rate than unsecured personal loans because the lender has collateral.

Gold loan apps typically offer loans between ₹10,000 and a few lakh rupees, depending on the weight and purity of the gold pledged. For borrowers who own gold but need liquidity, this can be a cost-effective option.

How to choose the right option

The variety is a genuine advantage, but it also means you need to be clear about what you actually need before opening an app and tapping “Apply.” A credit line makes sense for ongoing, unpredictable expenses. A consumer durable loan is perfect for a one-time purchase. A short-term salary advance solves a very specific, time-bound problem.

Pay close attention to the total cost of borrowing, not just the interest rate. Processing fees, late payment penalties, and prepayment charges all add up. Check whether the app’s lending partner is an RBI-regulated NBFC or bank. Unregulated lenders operating through apps have been a real problem in India, and the RBI has cracked down on several. Stick with apps that clearly disclose their lending partner’s identity and registration details.

The lending app space in India has matured considerably over the past few years. Borrowers today have more choices than ever, and that’s genuinely useful. But more choice also means more responsibility: to compare, to read the small print and to only borrow what you can comfortably afford to repay.
