Vidarbha Faces 27% Rainfall Deficit as Monsoon Withdraws

Nagpur: As the southwest monsoon begins its withdrawal, the impact of deficient rainfall is becoming increasingly visible across Vidarbha. The monsoon is expected to start withdrawing from Maharashtra within the next 48 hours and from Vidarbha within three to four days as rainfall activity remains subdued and dry air enters the region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast cloudy weather in Nagpur district on October 5, as a weather system remains active over Madhya Pradesh. The system could bring light showers to some parts of Vidarbha, while most districts, including Nagpur, are expected to remain largely dry.

Weather experts estimate that the monsoon withdrawal could be completed by around October 15. Vidarbha has recorded around 27% less rainfall than its long-period average, with several districts facing deficits of more than 40%.

According to weather department data, Amravati has recorded the highest rainfall deficit at 43%, followed by Akola at 41% and Washim at 37%. Nagpur and Wardha have recorded a 34% rainfall deficit.

Gondia is the only district in Vidarbha to have recorded near-normal rainfall, with just a 1% deficit.

The rainfall shortage has raised concerns over agricultural activities and water availability. Reduced rainfall could affect Kharif crops, while the state government has also restricted the release of excess water for irrigation.

Maharashtra has identified 265 of its 358 talukas across 32 districts as drought-affected, covering nearly 74% of the state. The government has announced relief measures for farmers, agricultural labourers and other vulnerable sections.

With the monsoon nearing its end, continued rainfall deficiency remains a concern for Vidarbha’s agriculture and water resources.
