Nagpur: As Valentine’s Week unfolds, a fresh warning from the Bajrang Dal has stirred debate and concern among young couples in Nagpur. The outfit has cautioned couples against engaging in what it described as “indecent behaviour” at religious and public places, stating that action may follow if its appeal is ignored.
The advisory, circulated through social media platforms including Instagram, has led to unease among several youngsters planning Valentine’s Day outings. With February 14 falling on a weekend this year, restaurants, cafés and clubs across the city have lined up special events and themed parties, raising questions over whether celebrations may face protests or disruptions.
Valentine’s Week has often witnessed heightened activity from right-wing groups in Nagpur and other cities, with public displays of affection drawing criticism. In recent years, social media has amplified discussions around moral policing, with civil society members urging restraint and respect for individual freedoms.
Kamal Hariyani, Co-ordinator of Bajrang Dal Nagpur, maintained that the organisation is not opposed to love but objects to obscenity and alleged drug use at such gatherings. Referring to a previous violent incident at a Christmas party on Wardha Road, he claimed that such events are increasingly linked to undesirable activities. “We are not against love, but against actions that harm social values,” he said.
The group has announced a rally on February 13 at 4 pm, scheduled to proceed from Lokmat Square to Telankhedi Hanuman Mandir, as part of its campaign.
Meanwhile, the Nagpur Police have heightened security arrangements across the city. Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal stated that multiple teams have been deployed to conduct surprise inspections and ensure law and order during Valentine’s Week celebrations. He warned that any form of violence or unlawful conduct would invite strict legal action, while advising citizens to observe decorum in public spaces.
With increased surveillance and parallel warnings from social outfits, Valentine’s Day celebrations in Nagpur are set to unfold under close watch this year.
