Two Strangers, One Stage: Inside Surbhi’s Garam Masala Dating

Created by Surbhi and Wyatt Feegrado, the live show turns an ordinary romantic encounter into a conversation with the whole room.

A first date usually involves two people trying to decide what they think of each other. At Garam Masala Dating, there is also an audience, a pair of comedians and the possibility that someone watching would rather be on the date themselves.

The show, co-created by Surbhi and Wyatt Feegrado, brings South Asian singles on stage for a live meeting shaped by comedy, questions and audience participation. The premise is easy to explain. What the people involved will actually say is harder to predict.

That space between a clear setup and an uncertain outcome is where the hosts work. A conversation has to develop far enough for the room to become interested. The comedians can prompt it or find a joke in an answer, but the attraction, awkwardness and differences between the participants give each pairing its own direction.

The audience’s role goes beyond watching and spectators are invited to try to “steal” one of the daters. The show ends with a singles mixer after the performance, extending the evening beyond the people selected to go on stage.

There is something familiar in that public interest in a private decision. South Asian dating can come with questions about family, marriage and other people’s expectations. Here, those questions become part of the entertainment, with a comedian hosting the conversation rather than a relative overseeing an introduction.

Online, the dates reach people who may never have been inside the comedy club. The team reports more than 200 million content views. The clips put Surbhi and Feegrado in front of viewers alongside the singles, making their handling of an encounter part of what people recognise about the show.

The format helps explain why an encounter can work outside the room. A viewer does not need a season’s worth of backstory to understand a first date. The basic question is immediately available: are these two people interested in each other? A short exchange can offer enough information to make someone keep watching.

The live performance asks more of the hosts. A clip can isolate one exchange. An evening has to hold together across several conversations, interruptions and changes of pace. Surbhi and Feegrado are responsible for keeping that larger show moving while leaving room for something they could not have written beforehand.

A night opens with ten minutes of stand-up from each host, which doubles as a warning about what the daters are in for. Then the first pair walks out. They get a few minutes of ordinary small talk before the games begin. “Surbhi asks what the aunties would ask and I ask what the friends would ask,” says Feegrado. “Between the two of us, nobody on that stage gets to hide.”

Daters tend to describe the experience as easier than it looks. One man who appeared last season, a 29-year-old product manager from Jersey City, told the hosts he had been on worse dates with nobody watching. When the conversation turned awkward, 300 people laughed, and he found that it helped. He and his date went for dosa afterwards.

Some pairings have lasted longer than the dosa. The team knows of several couples who kept seeing each other after the show, and one pair from the second season is still together. Surbhi does not promise anyone a relationship. The application form says so in capital letters.

That is what makes Garam Masala Dating more than a collection of dating clips. Behind each excerpt is a room where the conversation continues after the moment that made it online. Someone still has to answer the next question, and the audience is still listening.
