Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a hike in tariffs on Indian imports from 25% to 50%, set to be implemented after 21 days. While the current 25% tariff remains effective as of now, the potential increase has raised concerns over whether it will impact iPhone prices in the U.S. or India.
According to sources, the 50% tariff would apply to goods exported from India to the U.S. This means iPhones manufactured in India and imported into the U.S. could become more expensive if the hike is enforced. However, officials suggest that the impact on Apple products may be minimal.
Apple’s Core Products May Get Exempted
White House officials have hinted that Apple’s core devices — including the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook — may be exempt from the increased tariffs under a special framework. This would mean the price of iPhones in the U.S. would likely remain unaffected for now.
Tim Cook Meets Trump, Announces Major Investment
Apple CEO Tim Cook was spotted at the White House on Wednesday, the same day news of the proposed tariff hike broke. During his meeting with Donald Trump, Cook announced an increase in Apple’s manufacturing investment in the U.S. — from an earlier pledged $500 billion to $600 billion.
Special Tariff Framework for Apple
Reports indicate that a “special tariff framework” for Apple devices is under consideration and could be announced soon. If implemented, Apple’s India-assembled devices could remain outside the scope of Trump’s new tariff policy.
