Nagpur: A horrifying electrocution incident shattered the quiet morning in Jaibhole Nagar under Khaparkheda Police Station limits near Nagpur on Friday, claiming the lives of a mother and her son within seconds of each other.
The victims were identified as Nirmala Uttam Sontakke (51) and her son Lokesh Uttam Sontakke (31), residents of Ward No. 1 in the same locality.
Police said Lokesh, an employee at a private firm working in the Bhanegaon Open Cast Coal Mine, had returned from his night shift and was fast asleep. Meanwhile, Nirmala finished her bath and began hanging clothes on a metal wire outside the house. She had no idea that the wire had come into contact with a live overhead power line.
The moment she touched the clothes, a powerful electric current surged through her body. Her desperate cries woke Lokesh, who ran out and shouted, “Wait, Aai!” before trying to pull her away. But in his attempt to save her, he too was fatally electrocuted. Both collapsed instantly.
The tragic chain of events has plunged the locality into mourning. Neighbours were deeply affected, especially by Lokesh’s instinctive attempt to rescue his mother. Lokesh was unmarried, while his father, Uttam Sontakke, works as a civil mason. The sudden loss of two family members has left them inconsolable.
Their final rites were performed in the evening amid heartbreaking scenes.
Khaparkheda Police have registered a case of accidental death. Senior PI Harish Rumkar is conducting further investigations.
