Nagpur:
The Commissioner of Police S P Yadav who addressed a press conference on Thursday came down heavily on Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) for the traffic mess prevailing in the city. The Police Chief, in not so many words, blamed the civic body for increasing accidents being witnessed in recent days.

The CP, while elaborating the issue, said that the NMC has abysmally failed to create parking zones at major markets, malls and other places across the city. They have failed to ensure big buildings and malls have parking slots in the basements. The result is haphazard parking of vehicles on roads, traffic chaos and the accidents. The Star Buses are parked on roads as there is no Bus Stand worth the name. “It is sole responsibility of NMC to find a proper place and set up infrastructure for parking of Star Buses as it is they who are running the transport system.

Lack of parking arrangements at most of the busy spots is adding woes to already traffic mess,” stated the top cop and added that because of a crack down by the High Court some semblance is being restored as the encroachments at major buildings and hospitals and at other places are being demolished to facilitate parking of vehicles.

The Police Chief further said that the menace of autorickshaws being felt mostly at Variety Square, Jhansi Rani Square, Panchsheel Square and other places across the city will be dealt with sternly and within two-three days the scourge will be taken care of in the form of a special drive. The problem of six-seater autos that carry more passengers than the capacity will be tamed with a heavy hand. “It is also the duty of citizens to desist themselves from travelling in such autos cramped vehicles. Similarly, parents should also come forward in lodging complaints if they find autos transporting school students beyond capacity,” asserted the Commissioner of Police S P Yadav.
