Nagpur: A moment of negligence turned fatal in Minimata Nagar, Kalamna, where a two-year-old boy lost his life after falling into an uncovered water tank on February 24.
The deceased, Kush Rajendra Patel, had been playing near his house when he suddenly went missing, sending his family into panic. After a frantic search in the neighbourhood, the toddler was found unconscious inside a water tank located beneath a staircase outside the residence of a neighbour.
The tank reportedly had no lid or protective covering.
Kush was immediately pulled out by family members and rushed first to Parekh Clinic and later to a private hospital in Wardhaman Nagar. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival, leaving the family devastated.
Following a complaint lodged by the child’s father, Jitendra Shankar Patel (37), Kalamna Police initiated an inquiry. The investigation revealed that the water tank belonged to Guddu alias Imammuddin Mohammad Azaruddin Shah (42), who resides opposite the complainant’s house. Police concluded that the tank had been left open without basic safety measures, leading to the tragic accident.
Based on prima facie findings of negligence, PSI Hanumant Ingle registered a case under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused neighbour has been arrested, and further investigation is underway.
The heartbreaking incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by uncovered water storage units in residential areas, especially in neighbourhoods where young children play unattended.
