Nagpur: An adult tiger was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Makardhokda Sub-Area under the North Umred Forest Range on Sunday evening. This is the 8th tiger death in Maharashtra in the last two months.
The local people informed the Forest Department around 4 pm about a tiger lying motionless in the bushes. After getting the information, a forest team rushed to the spot and cordoned off 500 meter area of the spot as per the SOP of National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). As per the injuries, the tiger died in a territorial fight with another big cat.
Nagpur Deputy Conservator of Forests Bharat Singh Hada said that all the body parts of the animal are intact and poaching is ruled out. It can also be a territorial fight. The carcass was found on a private farm. The post-mortem will reveal the exact cause of death, he stated and added, as it was getting dark, the post-mortem will be conducted on Monday as per the NTCA protocol.
Narendra Chandewar, ACF; Ajinkya Bhatkar, Representative of NTCA; Rohit Kadu, Representative, PCCF (W ildlife); Dr Vinod Samarth, Dr Pramod Sapate, Dr Swapnil Sonwane, Dr Kakde, A K Madavi and other forest men were present during the preliminary investigation.
In another development, a sub-adult tigress cub, around 9 months, was captured by the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) rescue team. Surces said the tigress cub was captured with chemical immobilization from compartment number 67 in the Kacchepar beat in the Talodhi Forest Range of the Bramhapuri Division. Officials said the animal suffered a fracture on the right forelimb in the shoulder region. The cub has been shifted to the Transit Treatment Centre (TTC) at Chandrapur.
