Thunderstorms, heavy rain hit city, orange alert in Vid

Nagpur: Thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain hit the city causing disruptions on Tuesday.

Two big trees were uprooted. The first incident occurred on VIP road near Traffic Park, where a tree fell on a car in motion. Fortunately, no one was injured. In Narsala, another tree was uprooted, and a fire tender from the Sakkardara station responded to the situation.

The civic authorities are assessing the situation and have begun clean-up operations to restore normalcy.

“Residents are advised to stay cautious and report incidents to the authorities,” said officials from NMC’s fire and emergency services department.

The district received moderate thunderstorm accompanied with gusty wind (speed reaching up to 40-50kmph) late on Tuesday evening while the maximum temperature remained five notches below normal at 34.5 degrees Celsius. The day remained pleasant with cool breeze blowing and a partly cloudy sky. The sun showed up only for a brief spell in the day.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for five districts for Wednesday as the weather is likely to remain inclement. Moderate thunderstorm accompanied with lightning, gusty wind and hailstorm are likely to occur at isolated places in Amravati, Buldhana, Nagpur, Wardha and Washim on Wednesday as per the orange alert…

Under yellow alert, the IMD has warned of light to moderate thunderstorm accompanied with lightning, gusty wind (speed reaching up to 30-40kmph) to occur at isolated places over Akola, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia and Yavatmal districts of Vidarbha.

Nagpur received 5.6mm rainfall, Wardha recorded 22.6mm, Amravati 4.8, and Brahmapuri 10mm in the last 24 hours.
