Nagpur: In a tragic incident in Umred, Nagpur district, three people drowned in Matkazari Lake on Thursday. The victims, part of a family outing, were identified as Jitendra Istaram Shende (35) from Gulmohar Nagar, Bharatwada, Nagpur; Santosh Kishore Bavane (25) from Shravan Nagar, Wathoda, Nagpur; and Nisheth Raju Popat (12) from Wathoda, Nagpur.
The family, along with some relatives, had driven to a farm near Pachgaon-Surgaon to enjoy some mangoes. Finding no mangoes on the trees, they decided to have a picnic near Matkazari Lake. Attracted by the water, some members decided to take a swim.
Jitendra and Santosh were the first to enter the lake, followed by Nisheth. As they swam, Jitendra began to struggle and drown. In an attempt to save him, Santosh and Nisheth also started drowning. The car driver, who accompanied the group, jumped in and managed to rescue Nisheth, but he was already deceased.
Authorities, along with villagers, responded promptly to the scene. All three bodies were recovered late Thursday night. The police have registered the incident as accidental deaths and sent the bodies for autopsy at a government hospital.
