Nagpur: A tragic road accident claimed the life of a 20-year-old youth after an unidentified speeding vehicle rammed into his Activa scooter outside the National Zoological Park (Nagpur Zoo) on Thursday afternoon. His friend, who was riding pillion, sustained injuries in the collision and is undergoing treatment.
The deceased has been identified as Yuvraj Rajendra Mohadikar (20), a resident of Rajendra Nagar, KDK College Road, near Neelam Pan Shop, Line No. 12-B, Nandanvan, Nagpur. His friend, Ashish Pyarelal Patel (22), a resident of Jaripatka, was also travelling with him when the fatal accident occurred.
According to police, the accident took place between 3.45 pm and 4 pm on October 29, when the two youths were returning to Nagpur from Dahegaon after attending college. They were travelling on an Activa moped (MH-49-AV-8459) when an unidentified vehicle, allegedly being driven at high speed and in a rash and negligent manner, suddenly rammed into their scooter head-on on the road opposite the National Zoo Park, within the jurisdiction of Gittikhadan Police Station.
The impact of the collision left Yuvraj critically injured, while Ashish sustained comparatively minor injuries. The unidentified driver allegedly fled the scene without stopping to assist the injured youths or informing the authorities.
Both injured youths were rushed to Mayo Hospital for emergency medical treatment. However, doctors examined Yuvraj and declared him dead, turning the afternoon journey into a devastating tragedy for his family. Ashish is currently receiving medical treatment.
Following a complaint lodged by Mohanish Mahadeorao Mohadikar (28), a relative of the deceased and a resident of Rajendra Nagar, Gittikhadan Police registered a case against the unidentified vehicle driver.
Sub-Inspector Rahul Rathod has registered the offence under Sections 281, 106(1) and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 134 and 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Police have launched a search to trace the absconding driver and identify the vehicle involved in the fatal collision. Further investigation is underway.
The tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by reckless driving, particularly on busy city roads, where a moment of negligence can destroy young lives and leave families devastated.
