Talk held on “Climbing Your Own Everest” by Bimla Negi Deoskar

Bimla Negi Deoskar, who led the All women team to Mt Bhagirathi II, in Garhwal delivered a talk on “Climbing your own Everest” at VIA hall. The programme was organized by VIA – HRD Forum. A first person account of the challenges that one encounters during a real life journey was narrated by Bimla Negi Deoskar, based on her team’s miraculous escape from the Himalaya during June, 2013.

The presentation started with the introduction by Girish Deodhar, Chairman HRD Forum, who narrated the importance of having one’s own everest. Deodhar stressed on the need to have self confidence to achieve the desired Goals in personal life.

Bimla Negi, who led the All Women Expedition of Indian Mountaineering Foundation to Mount Bhagirathi II peak at the height of 21060 ft High Mountain in Garhwal Himalaya during June 2013 was hit by the devastating cloudburst at the height of 19000 ft above msl. The team was stationed at 3 different camps, waiting for their turn to reach the summit when the natural disaster strikes the Himalayan region. The team was camping behind Kedarnath Peaks which was among the worst affected areas.

Bimla and her team had a miraculous escape which she contributes to the amazing team work and the decision making during the course of the expedition. Her experiences of real life rescue and facing untoward challenging situations simulates the corporate scenario and thus the HRD forum organised the program to understand the leadership and related concepts in real life situation.

Bimla stressed that the role of a leader is to motivate the team members to give their best for the success of the team, At times, the situation is so critical that the resources and the energy gets exhausted and it becomes a very critical situation or a matter of survival for the entire team. She found that during similar situation, she could motivate her team member by having an emotional bond and she insisted that for becoming a true leader, one should build the emotional trust amongst the members. Her field does not accept any compromises on performance and hence stressed that the education and upbringing of the youth should contain such exposure that makes them strong, resourceful and prepare for any eventuality in life.

Prafull Doshi, President VIA lauded the efforts of the team. Ashit Sinha, Advisor-VIA HRD Forum expressed his views on the expedition and learning from such experiences  and said that much of the situations are taught or referred by the corporate groups, but having to know the first hand experiences is definitely a good learning for all.

The programme was largely attended by students, Industrialists, Young Entrepreneurs’ and members of VIA.

At the outset, the Speaker Bimla Negi Deoskar, was welcomed by Prafull Doshi, President-VIA. Opening remarks was given by Girish Deodhar, Chairman, HRD Forum. Smita Dabholkar, faculty IMT Nagpur and Convener HRD Forum introduced the speaker. Summing up and vote of thanks was given by Ashit Sinha, Advisor- VIA HRD Forum. Prafull Doshi, President VIA also presented memento to the speaker.
