New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to Centre’s proposal to extend the deadline for the mandatory linking of Aadhaar number to avail various welfare schemes and open new bank accounts and operate mobile sim cards.

A five-judge bench led by Chief Justice Dipak Misra had completed the hearing on Thursday. In the hearing, Attorney General KK Venugopal said in the court that the government has extended the deadline for linking Aadhaar number to various services to March 31, 2018. He told the apex court that the government was ready to extend the deadline of linking mobile phone numbers from February 6 if the court ordered. The court might issue an order regarding this.

The Narendra Modi dispensation is leaving no stones unturned to make Aadhaar a citizen’s prime identification. The government is using the unique identification number to plug leakages in welfare schemes and to check corruption.
