The mid sized sheer black truck parked bang opposite the main gate of VNIT ( near Mate square) but on the other of the road is visible from even a distance. It is easily the biggest food ‘truck’ in the vicinity and the black and yellow color scheme make it more striking. But even if you miss it visually, the aromas emanating from it will compel you to stop and pay attention. Like the ‘Masala chicken’ aroma that drew us to it the other day.

“What’s cooking?” we asked. “Nothing special. Just some left over chicken pieces – from the process of getting boneless chicken – that we are frying for ourselves; it’s not even a dish on the menu.”

But we wanted to taste it – and found it to be full of flavours, taste and that tempting ‘teekha masala’ we tend to drool over. In a few minutes it was polished off, without any roti, rice or bread to accompany it!

After having that as ‘aperitif’ we thought the other offerings would be ‘feeka’. But the crispy veg, the Punjabi rice, the chicken rice and Veg sandwiches were equally spicy and tasty. As was the Oreo milk shake – the in -house specialty.

‘You want anything else? Have a party at home – for 2 or even 20? Just give us a call, we will love to cater by cooking exactly what you want and how you want it!” Assures Samarth, the 20 + owner of Street chef. Samarth runs this along with his father who quit his job in Chennai to come help his son start this food truck. Samarth is still an undergrad student but has made his mark as chef already in his group of friends by voluntarily cooking up a feast for any friend’s birthday – so that giving a party will not burn a hole in the poor guy’s pocket!

This is exactly his philosophy over the pricing of Street Chef’s offerings. Every dish, veg or non veg, is so attractively priced that you feel there has to have been a printing mistake! Yet no dish is prepared and kept. Everything is made fresh, after the order is placed. But very zhatpat! It helps when you have a chef who has been cooking in the city’s top club for two decades!!

Next time you are in the mood for Chinese/ Punjabi/ Continental ( like sandwiches) just head to Street Chef!

And Yes – they open even during the day… so students can get fresh and affordable breakfast too. What do they serve?? Well… what do you want to eat??
